Hollowglass on the Nature of Aura

A Hollowglass response to the Lorekeeper treatise, held in the archive Released in the Lorekeepers' compilation. Annotated in the margins by me.

On this document, before you read it.

The longest paper in the collection and the most heavily cut of the five House responses, and there is a fact about it you should be holding while you read.

The Lorekeepers are Hollowglass. Everybody knows this and nobody says it. It is a courtesy all five Houses maintain with a straight face, and have done for longer than any of us have been alive. I mention it here and not elsewhere because here it matters: this is a document Hollowglass wrote, compiled, cut and then handed to me with the cuts already in it.

That is either the most rigorous thing in the collection or the least. A House that holds its own paper to a harder standard than it holds the other four is behaving impeccably. A House that decides in private what the public may know about the House's own subject, and then publishes the result under a collective name so that no individual has to answer for it, is doing something else. From where I am standing I cannot tell the two apart.

Archivist Seln has been generous with me for four years. What follows is mostly counting.

The Deeper Truth: A Hollowglass Internal Treatise on the Nature of Aura

Compiled from the Archives of the Whispering Deep For the eyes of inducted members only Classification: Restricted - █████ and above

Preface: On the Document You Have Already Read

You have read the Lorekeeper treatise On the Nature of Aura. You were meant to read it. We wrote it.

The Lorekeepers are House Hollowglass's public face, scholars who compile, publish and distribute knowledge that serves the Heartlands. They do good work. The treatise they produced is accurate and appropriately incomplete.

What follows is what we did not publish.

This document contains knowledge the other Houses lack the context to receive safely, and speculation that would cause more harm than understanding if it spread carelessly. It contains truths the Registry must never possess, and mysteries we have not solved ourselves.

You are reading it because you have been judged ready. Do not share it, or hint at its contents to colleagues below your clearance. The Lorekeepers exist precisely so that knowledge can flow outward without these deeper currents escaping with it.

Read carefully and remember precisely. What you learn here changes what you are.

Part One: On Our ███

The Whispering Deep

House Hollowglass dwells beneath the Sablemire Lowlands, in a cavern system unlike any other in the Heartlands. The surface folk call it the Whispering Deep and tell stories about echoes that answer questions and stones that remember names. They are right, and understand less than half of what they are describing.

The Deep is a place where the boundary between material and ███ has worn thin through age and use, rather than being torn open as it is where the Deepening pools. For millennia before the Houses formed, something lived here. Something that thought and remembered. We do not know what it was. We know what it left behind.

The stone of the Whispering Deep is threaded with crystalline veins that respond to focused will. Words spoken with intention echo in ways ordinary sound does not. They persist, bouncing from wall to wall, softening gradually and never quite fading. The oldest chambers hold whispers from centuries past, layered on top of each other like sediment. To enter them unprepared is to drown in voices.

This is why we came here.

The Memory Stone

The crystal formations that vein the Deep store pattern, which is to say meaning as well as sound. A word spoken carelessly might echo for hours and fade. A word spoken with Aura behind it, with genuine intent to preserve, settles into the stone and stays.

Our archives are walls and our libraries are caverns. The accumulated knowledge of House Hollowglass is cut into the substance of our home rather than written on paper, and any inducted member who knows how to listen can reach it.

The process is called inscription, and it is the first technique every Hollowglass initiate learns. You press your palm to the stone, focus your intent, and speak what you wish to preserve. If your will is sufficient, the crystal accepts it. If not, the words echo and fade like any others.

Reading is harder. The stone does not organise itself. Inscribed knowledge exists where it was placed, layered with everything else placed in that location across centuries. Learning to hear one inscription among the accumulated murmur takes years of practice. The deepest archivists can navigate chambers so dense with preserved thought that lesser minds would come apart in them.

This is why Hollowglass practitioners are rarely field operatives. Our Aura is as potent as any House's, and our training emphasises reception over projection and listening over speaking. We are shaped by the Deep, and the Deep is hard on anyone who tries to shout over it.

█████

In the deepest reaches of the Whispering Deep, the boundary between material and ███ grows thin enough to see through.

We do not speak of this to outsiders. The Lorekeepers' treatise mentions the ███ as a metaphysical concept, planes of primordial energy and the █████ between them, theoretical and distant.

In the Third Descent, the ███ is visible.

The cavern walls there do not reflect torchlight normally. They glow faintly from within, in colours that shift like oil on water. The air feels denser without being harder to breathe. Experienced archivists describe the sensation as standing in a library where all the books are watching you.

Sometimes, if you sit long enough in the right chamber with your mind sufficiently still, you see through the stone into elsewhere. You glimpse the planes the treatise describes, Fire's endless radiance and Darkness's pregnant potential. The primordial sources, visible from a place where the boundary has worn so thin that sight crosses over.

This is where our deepest research is conducted, and where the secrets we never shared with the Lorekeepers were first learned.

It is also where we lost three senior archivists in the last century, to something they looked at for too long.

The Dangers Below

The Whispering Deep is not safe.

The upper chambers, where initiates train and common archives are kept, pose little risk. The stone there is dense with preserved knowledge and the preservation is stable. Speak with intention there and the Deep rewards you.

Lower, the risks grow.

Some inscriptions were made by minds that should not have been preserved. Madness echoes as clearly as wisdom. There are chambers we have sealed because the accumulated whispers in them have taken on a coherence they should not possess, patterns of thought from long-dead archivists that repeat and reinforce until they approximate something like will. We do not know whether these are ghosts or something else. We know that they reach for minds that linger.

Lower still, in █████ regions, the danger changes character. The boundary is thin in both directions. What we glimpse through the worn stone sometimes glimpses us back. Entities that exist in the ███, of which we have catalogued seventeen distinct categories and suspect more, can perceive observers in the Third Descent. Most show no interest. Some do.

We have lost fewer archivists to ███ attention than to accumulated madness. The losses to ███ attention were more complete. Nothing came back, including the bodies.

At the bottom is the █████, which we have mapped and do not enter. The boundary there is so thin that physical presence becomes uncertain. Archivists who ventured down reported their hands passing through stone and their feet sinking into floors that had turned permeable. One returned from a brief expedition seven years after she descended, having experienced a single afternoon.

We sealed the █████ three centuries ago. We do not know what is down there. We have chosen not to establish it, and that decision is recorded here as a decision, so that no one later mistakes it for an absence of curiosity.

Part Two: On the Source of Aura

What the Lorekeepers Published

The treatise describes practitioners as doorways, souls marked with "glimmers" that connect to distant planes. It lists the Primordial Planes, describes the ███ fabric that binds them, and acknowledges that the fabric itself is poorly understood.

This is accurate, and carefully incomplete.

What We Know of the ███ Fabric

The Lorekeepers' treatise notes that scholars who pursued understanding of the █████ "produced only contradiction and, in three documented cases, madness."

We documented those cases. They were ours.

The fabric connecting the planes is also responsive. It notices attention directed at it, and the more closely you study it, the more present it becomes in your awareness.

Archivist ███ Hollowglass spent eleven years analysing testimonies from practitioners who had glimpsed the fabric during high-tier development. She cross-referenced descriptions and built models of what the fabric might be. Her notes remain inscribed in a sealed chamber, available to scholars of sufficient advancement.

By year seven she reported that her models were "completing themselves." Details she had not yet added would appear in her reconstructions, as though the fabric were assisting her understanding. By year nine she reported conversations with the model itself, which had begun to answer her queries.

She celebrated this as a breakthrough. We celebrated with her.

By year eleven she had stopped distinguishing between the model and reality. The fabric had become so present in her perception that she could no longer see the material world without its overlay. She spoke to colleagues who had been dead for centuries, and inscribed knowledge from sources she could not identify onto stones that accepted her words without question.

Her final inscription, before we sealed her chamber:

"It is not a fabric. It is not a binding. It is a ███, and we are all threads, and I can finally see the pattern, and the pattern sees me, and..."

Her voice continues in that chamber. We do not know whether she is dead. We do not know whether "dead" is a meaningful category for what she became.

The other two cases followed similar trajectories. We no longer permit focused study of the ███ fabric itself.

On ███

The treatise mentions ███ once, in passing: "███ is sometimes attributed ███ status, though accounts of their abilities are contradictory."

This is intentional misdirection.

██████████████████ ███ is not a person, or if they were once, they have not been for a very long time.

Our oldest inscriptions, predating the Houses, predating the Four, predating anything we can reliably date, refer to ███ as a force rather than an individual. █████████████████████ Not "███ said" but "███ speaks in the silence between."

████████████████████████████████████████████████

The Vaulins call it the █████ that connects all living things. The Ironvale do not notice it at all. The Sablemire sense it as the spaces between. The Saltmarch experience it as the breath that carries connection.

We know it better than any of them, because we have seen what happens when it pays attention.

███ does not intervene often. It does not demand worship or obedience. It is simply there, underlying everything, and occasionally, when someone studies it too closely or the patterns of the ███ shift in ways we cannot predict, it reaches through and touches what touched it.

Three archivists in a century is a small price for what we have learned. Others might call us reckless. We are the only House willing to look directly at what holds reality together.

On the True Nature of Glimmers

The treatise describes glimmers as "microscopic apertures" that connect practitioner souls to external sources. This is the model we shared because it is safe to share.

Our deeper understanding is that glimmers are resonances rather than holes.

Every soul vibrates metaphysically, in patterns that can be detected by those with the training. Most souls vibrate at frequencies that interact only with the material world. Practitioner souls vibrate at frequencies that also interact with the ███.

The "connection" to a primordial plane is a harmony, a match between the practitioner's █████ and the frequency of a particular plane. Fire-touched practitioners resonate with Fire, and that resonance allows them to express Fire's nature through their own actions.

This distinction matters because it changes what development means.

The treatise describes growth as widening apertures, consolidating scattered glimmers into a unified Root, eventually merging with the source entirely. This is approximately accurate from the outside.

From inside Hollowglass understanding, growth is tuning. An Awakening practitioner resonates with their source inconsistently, their frequency wavering, catching briefly, losing harmony, catching again. An Intent practitioner has found stable resonance. A Mastery practitioner has begun to resonate with deeper harmonics of their source, reaching aspects that simple resonance cannot.

A Presence practitioner resonates so strongly that they broadcast. Their frequency emanates outward and affects the material world around them. The Source Radiation the treatise documents is a soul vibrating powerfully enough to influence its surroundings, rather than leakage from an open portal.

At ███, the practitioner's frequency becomes indistinguishable from their source's frequency. The resonance is so complete that there is no longer a meaningful distinction between the practitioner and the plane they resonate with.

This has implications for the Four, which we address below.

Part Three: On ██████

What the Lorekeepers Published

The treatise briefly mentions ██████, smaller planes "formed spontaneously" from concentrated consciousness, potentially accounting for practitioners whose abilities defy classification.

This is the surface of a very deep pool.

What We Know

████████████████████████████████████████████████

This typically begins at Presence. The practitioner's broadcast frequency is strong enough to shape the ███ medium around their point of connection, and the fabric responds by opening a pocket, a small region where that specific frequency dominates and produces effects unique to the individual rather than generic to their source.

████████████████████████████████████████████████

████████████████████████████████████████████████

This is why ███ practitioners are so dangerous. They carry their own reality with them, and that reality can override the consensus reality the rest of us inhabit.

On What ██████ Contain

This is the knowledge we guard most carefully.

A █████ is shaped by a practitioner's consciousness, which means their memories, fears, desires and beliefs as well as their will. Everything a practitioner has experienced, everything they are, becomes part of the substance of the realm.

We have glimpsed ██████ through █████. We have spoken, carefully and briefly, with entities that claim to have observed them directly.

They are not safe places.

████████████████████████████████████████████████

One of our sealed archives holds the testimony of a Presence practitioner who briefly entered her own developing realm and met something there. She described it as herself, inverted. Everything she had suppressed, given form and a voice that mocked her with her own secrets.

She never reached ███. █████████████████████████████████

████████████████████████████████████████████████

They sealed themselves into realms that contained their own shadows, permanently.

Part Four: On the Four

What the Lorekeepers Published

The treatise describes the Four as ███ practitioners who ████████ in a final act of sacrifice, imprinting their will on the material world permanently. It suggests they persist in separate ██████, isolated from each other forever.

This is the story. It serves its purpose.

What We Know

The Four became the seal.

Resonance at ███ is indistinguishable from one's source. Each of the Four had become a walking extension of their respective plane, being Fire, Water, Earth and Air incarnate in material form rather than channelling them.

When they acted together, what they combined was their identities. Four individuals, each resonating at plane-level frequency, harmonised those frequencies into a single chord.

That chord is the Still Ring.

The Four neither died nor retreated into separate realms. They merged, with each other and with the structure they created. The Still Ring is the Four, transformed from individuals into a permanent feature of reality.

This is why the seal holds. It is maintained by existence rather than by power that could run out, by four souls that now exist only as components of a structure that cannot be unmade without unmaking them.

They knew what they were doing. Our oldest inscriptions preserve fragments of their final conversations, passed down from witnesses who fled before the transformation completed. They knew they would neither return nor remain themselves, and they chose it anyway.

"Let us be the ring, and whatever the world needs us to be, forever, so that no one else has to."

On Why the Seal Has Seams

The treatise mentions, carefully and in passing, that the Deepening pools in "wounded places" despite being sealed.

This is the question we have spent three centuries trying to answer. If the Four became the seal, and the seal is their existence made permanent, how does the Deepening still seep through?

Our best theory, supported by observations from █████:

The Four were not perfect. Nobody is. When they merged, when they combined their frequencies into a single chord, their imperfections merged as well.

The seams in the seal are the places where the Four's own shadows found expression, the fears and doubts they carried and the parts of themselves they could not fully harmonise with each other.

Where one of the Four doubted, the seal is thinner. Where two of them disagreed, it shows fractures. Where all four carried the same deep fear, and facing what they faced they must have, the seal is close to permeable.

The seal leaks the Deepening because the souls that comprise the seal are not entirely whole.

This has implications. If the seal's weaknesses are the Four's weaknesses, then understanding the Four, truly understanding what they feared and what they failed to reconcile in themselves, might let us predict where the Deepening will pool next.

We have been working on this for three centuries and have made progress. We do not share it with the Lorekeepers, because we do not fully trust our conclusions and because the implications are difficult enough that we have chosen not to set them down in a document at this clearance.

If the seal fails, if the Deepening breaks through in force, it will be because the Four's sealed shadows finally broke free. We do not know what that would mean for the Four themselves, or for the structure of reality that depends on their continued existence.

On this part. I am recording what is left rather than what is gone, because what is gone is nearly all of it. The heading survives. Under it, a question, three subheadings numbered one to three of which nothing survives but the numbering, and almost nothing else. Hollowglass wrote at length about something and removed it, leaving me the fact that there were exactly three explanations, one of which they thought worth acting on.

Part Six: On the Deepening

What the Lorekeepers Published

The treatise describes the Deepening as "sealed malevolence which pools in wounded places" with the ability to "rip glimmers from the soul." It frames the Deepening as antithetical to Aura, corruption that severs rather than connects.

This is accurate, and it leaves out the most important part.

What We Know

The Deepening is Aura's shadow.

Every force has its opposite, as light casts shadow and growth requires decay, each half necessary to define the other.

Aura is connection: the resonance between souls and sources, the harmony that lets practitioners express forces greater than themselves. Aura joins and the Deepening separates, as an inevitable counterweight to Aura itself rather than an invasion from outside. Wherever connection exists, severance becomes possible. Wherever harmony resonates, dissonance can form. The Deepening is what happens when connection fails and the forces that should join tear apart instead.

This is why it pools in wounded places. Wounds are separations. A betrayed trust is a relationship that should exist and does not. A corrupted land is an ecosystem that should function and cannot.

The Deepening is the wound's expression in the Aural spectrum. Where connection fails, it is already present, emerging from the failure rather than arriving at it.

On the Deepening's Ability to Sever

The Lorekeepers' treatise expresses puzzlement at how the Deepening can "rip out glimmers." Our understanding follows from the resonance model.

A practitioner's glimmers are resonances, frequencies that harmonise with external sources. The Deepening is anti-resonance. Where it touches a practitioner's connection it introduces dissonance, interference patterns that collapse the harmony rather than merely disrupting it.

The experience victims describe, of having something torn out of them, is subjectively accurate and metaphysically imprecise. Nothing is torn. The resonance stops. The frequency that connected soul to source falls out of harmony, and without that harmony the connection ceases to exist.

This is why no practitioner has ever recovered from Deepening exposure sufficient to sever their glimmers. The soul that once resonated no longer carries the capacity to, and the frequency that matched the source is gone.

We believe, without being able to prove it, that the frequency does not vanish entirely. It may persist somewhere, separated from the soul it once served. If so, the Deepening exiles practitioner potential rather than destroying it.

What that might mean, we do not know. Could severed frequencies be transplanted into other souls? Could the Deepening, properly understood, become a tool rather than only a threat?

These questions are restricted to First Circle discussion. The Registry must never learn that we have considered them.

On the True Nature of the Sealing

The Four sealed the Deepening by balancing it rather than containing it.

The Still Ring is a harmonic structure, a permanent resonance powerful and stable enough to maintain equilibrium between Aura and Deepening across the entire Heartlands.

Before the Four, █████ Age was characterised by catastrophic instability. Connection and severance warred unpredictably. Regions would flourish and then collapse into corruption. Practitioners would ascend and then disintegrate. The forces of joining and tearing were in constant violent flux.

The Four created stability. Their merged frequencies, embedded permanently into the fabric of reality, produce a constant harmonic tone that sets the balance between the forces. Aura can still flow. The Deepening can still pool. Neither can overwhelm the other while the Still Ring maintains its chord.

This is why the seams matter. Where the seal is weak, where the Four's harmonised frequencies waver from their own internal dissonance, the balance tips. The Deepening pools more freely and the local equilibrium shifts toward severance.

If the seal ever failed entirely and the Four's chord collapsed, the harmonic structure that keeps existence stable would simply be gone.

We do not know what would happen then. We know that the world before the Four was not kind.

Part Seven: On Consciousness at ███

What the Lorekeepers Published

The treatise describes ███ as the practitioner's soul "becoming one with" their source, their primary existence shifting to their plane, with only a projection remaining in the material world.

This is the safe version.

What We Know

Consciousness at ███ does not function as human consciousness functions.

We have interviewed no ███ practitioners. The Four are beyond communication, and other historical practitioners at that tier, if they existed, left no accessible testimony. We have observed █████ and spoken briefly and carefully with entities that exist there.

Their reports are consistent.

████████████████████████████████████████████████ A ███ fire-touched perceives as Fire perceives and experiences as Fire experiences, in a way that dissolves the boundaries of self.

The consciousness persists, as part of something much larger, no longer bound by individual limits and no longer distinguishable from the force it has become.

The practical implication is that the Four chose expansion rather than death, merging with each other and with their sources, becoming part of a structure that exceeds human scale. They lost their limits and gained permanence, at the cost of everything that made them themselves.

Are they still conscious? We believe so, in a way that does not map to individual experience. The Still Ring thinks and knows, after a fashion, as a structure that four people became rather than as four separate people.

This is the hardest truth for initiates to accept. The Four are here, all around us, in the fabric of the world they saved. They cannot hear us, because hearing requires a self that is separate from what it hears.

Part Eight: On the Other Houses

Purpose of This Section

The other Houses have each produced responses to the Lorekeeper treatise. We have read them and inscribed them in the appropriate archives. We assess them here for internal reference, on the understanding that no House possesses the full truth and all of them possess fragments of it.

Our assessments are clinical, written to understand where others stand so that we can navigate around them.

On House Vaulin

What They Claim: Aura is recognition of a "Living World" in which all things are already joined, and practitioners remember that they were never separate from power rather than drawing it from elsewhere. Growth is "reaching down" through "rings" of existence toward a "heartwood" centre where all forces converge.

What They Get Right: The emphasis on unity has merit. Our resonance model supports the idea that practitioners vibrate in harmony with their sources rather than standing apart from them, which is a form of oneness. The Vaulins' experience of "feeling at home" at higher tiers accurately describes what complete resonance produces. Their description of ███ as touching "the centre where all forces converge" aligns with our understanding of how the Four merged their frequencies.

What They Get Wrong: The Living World model is poetic and imprecise. The ███ is a distinct metaphysical space with its own dangers and its own inhabitants, rather than the deeper rings of a single organism. The Vaulins do not enter the Third Descent and do not know what waits in █████ regions. They speak of roots and heartwood because they have not looked closely enough to see what exists beyond the material.

Their model of growth is also too gentle. Coaxing roots toward water does not account for the restructuring that occurs during development, the collapse and reconstitution of the soul's resonance patterns.

What They Miss Entirely: ███. The Vaulins call it the █████ that connects all living things and claim to "simply acknowledge" it without pursuing understanding. This is avoidance rather than wisdom. They sense ███'s presence and choose not to look closely, because looking closely would challenge a comfortable model.

They also miss the █████ problem. If ███ means touching the centre where all forces converge, what happens to the individual's unique characteristics? The Vaulins do not ask, because they do not want to consider what their model implies about identity surviving transcendence.

Assessment: Useful allies and poor researchers.

On House Sablemire

What They Claim: Aura is capability to be trained and refined. Metaphysics matters less than practical application. Their primary concerns are concealment and precision. They frame Presence as "the end of cover" and counsel practitioners to stop growing if stealth matters more than power.

What They Get Right: The emphasis on discipline and control is sound. A practitioner who cannot regulate their output is a liability whatever their tier. Their observation about knowing when not to act accurately describes a skill that other Houses undervalue, restraint as capability rather than as absence of capability.

Their note about network resonance, practitioners who work together developing coordinated Aura, is genuinely insightful. We have observed similar phenomena in our own archives, where inscriptions from members of the same research group harmonise more easily than inscriptions from strangers.

What They Get Wrong: Treating power as a resource to be spent misses what power actually is. A practitioner who holds back is deliberately disrupting their own resonance. This can be tactically useful, but it is hardly the neutral act the Sablemire imply.

Their framing of Presence as unambiguously costly reveals a philosophical limitation. To them, visibility is inherently bad, because they value concealment above other considerations. Visibility is only costly if your goals require invisibility. A Presence practitioner serving the Heartlands openly loses nothing meaningful and gains considerably.

What They Miss Entirely: The danger of their own approach. A practitioner trained to suppress their resonance is a practitioner trained to weaken their connection to their source. The Sablemire produce competent mid-tier operatives, and their developmental emphasis on concealment may be why they have produced no practitioners at Presence in recent memory.

They also miss the relational dimension. Aura is a relationship with one's source as well as a capability, and the Sablemire treat their sources as tools. We suspect this limits what those sources are willing to give them.

Assessment: Useful for certain tasks and limited by their own pragmatism. Watch them carefully.

On House Ironvale

What They Claim: Aura is a calling answered, power that practitioners were born to wield in service of protection. Growth is forging rather than cultivation. They frame their role as standing between threats and everyone else, and they accept the costs of that position without complaint.

What They Get Right: The emphasis on will and commitment is valid. Resonance requires alignment between soul and source, and that alignment is strengthened by clarity of purpose. A practitioner who believes deeply in what they do, who has what the Ironvale call forge-marks, often develops faster and more stably than one who is uncertain.

Their understanding of the Deepening as something that must be faced directly is also correct. While the Sablemire avoid it and the Vaulins tend the wounds afterward, the Ironvale confront it without flinching.

What They Get Wrong: The forge metaphor oversimplifies development. A blade is shaped by external force, the hammer and the smith's will, while practitioner development emerges from internal restructuring. The Ironvale train their people hard and confuse the training with the growth, when training only creates the conditions for it.

They also underestimate what they do not see. The Ironvale declare themselves "not philosophers" with apparent pride, which means they do not question their own methods or consider whether their approach carries costs they are not measuring.

What They Miss Entirely: The nature of the sealing. They understand the Four as heroes who sacrificed themselves, and think of ███ as becoming the wall that holds back the darkness. This is inspirationally accurate and metaphysically naive.

The sealing was an act of resonance rather than force. The Ironvale imagine four warriors standing shoulder to shoulder against a charging enemy. The reality is four frequencies merging into a chord that maintains cosmic equilibrium.

They miss this because they do not study, or ask questions that might complicate their clarity of purpose.

Assessment: Invaluable for what they do, and dangerous to rely on beyond it.

On House Saltmarch

What They Claim: Aura is a surface like any other, and surfaces can be shaped. What a practitioner radiates need not match what they are. They train perception first and projection second, and they hold everything about their presentation as negotiable except the cargo, which the Courier's Code makes absolute.

What They Get Right: The claim is correct, and we would rather it were not.

An Aura signature is a resonance pattern, and a resonance pattern can be interfered with by a practitioner who understands its structure. The Saltmarch arrived at this empirically, by living somewhere the boundary is thin enough that appearance and substance visibly come apart, and they arrived before we did. Our archives contain no inscription predating theirs on the subject.

Their training order is also correct and nobody else has noticed. They teach apprentices to perceive distortion before creating it, which means a Saltmarch practitioner learns the structure of resonance from the outside before ever manipulating their own. This is better pedagogy than ours.

What They Get Wrong: They describe what they do as bending truth rather than breaking it, and treat that as a meaningful distinction, which it is not. A false signature presented to a Registry examiner produces a false record, and the record outlives the crossing. The Saltmarch think in journeys. Records do not end when the journey does.

They also misjudge their own limits. They write that raw power fully unleashed cannot be disguised, which is true, and they draw the wrong conclusion from it. The strength of the emanation is beside the point. A Presence practitioner cannot hide because at Presence the practitioner and the signature have begun to be the same object. What they are calling a limit of technique is a fact about identity, and it will not yield to more practice.

What They Miss Entirely: What their art implies about ███.

If a soul's resonance can be made to read falsely, then the fabric that carries the reading can be given a false account of what passes through it. The Saltmarch believe they are deceiving observers. They have not asked whether they are also deceiving the thing that binds the planes together, or what it does when it notices.

They also have not asked what their own technique does to them over a career. A practitioner who spends decades holding a constructed signature is a practitioner whose resonance has spent decades out of true. We do not know the consequence. We suspect there is one. They have not looked, and we have not told them.

Assessment: The most metaphysically advanced House and the least aware of it. Valuable partners, and the only House whose techniques we would genuinely like to have in the archive.

On the Registry

The Registry is an administrative body that tracks and classifies practitioners across the Dominion. The Lorekeepers' treatise speculates carefully about whether the Registry possesses someone capable of closing glimmers intentionally.

We do not need to speculate.

████████████████████ No ███ practitioner exists outside the sealed Four.

The Registry does possess practitioners of significant capability, at Presence possibly and at Mastery certainly, with training focused specifically on containment and suppression. They cannot close glimmers permanently. They can disrupt resonance temporarily, producing effects similar to temporary mundanity, and they have used this in enforcement actions against practitioners who defied Registry authority.

More concerningly, the Registry has been conducting experiments.

We have inscriptions from three independent, cross-checked sources indicating that Registry facilities in the central Dominion have been attempting to understand and replicate the Deepening's severance effect, with a view to weaponising it rather than healing it.

Their success rate, as of our most recent intelligence, is low. They are trying. If they succeed, if the Registry develops the capability to sever practitioners from their sources permanently, the political implications are catastrophic.

We have not shared this with the Lorekeepers or with any House. This knowledge is restricted to First Circle, and the decision about whether and how to act on it remains under discussion.

Part Nine: On Our Role

What We Believe

House Hollowglass exists to understand.

Application is the Ironvale's concern, concealment the Sablemire's method, connection the Saltmarch's purpose, harmony the Vaulin's philosophy. We understand and we remember.

The Whispering Deep holds knowledge that predates the Houses and █████ itself. Our inscriptions contain truths that would reshape how every practitioner in the Heartlands thinks about their gift, and terrors that would shatter them. We hold both, because someone must.

The Lorekeepers serve a purpose. They distribute what can be safely distributed and maintain the reputation of scholarship without exposing anyone to the dangers of true understanding. They are the face we show the world. They believe what they write, mostly, and we do not disabuse them, because their sincerity is convincing.

The deeper work, the questions that have no safe answers, is ours.

What We Guard

Knowledge is power, quite literally.

A practitioner who understands resonance theory develops faster than one who fumbles through intuition. A scholar who comprehends the Deepening's relationship to Aura can predict where corruption will pool before it manifests.

We possess this knowledge and we do not share it freely.

Our critics call this selfishness, and the power our position confers is real, but we guard knowledge because knowledge shared carelessly causes harm.

Tell the Ironvale that the Four became a harmonic structure rather than a wall, and watch their certainty crumble into philosophical confusion. Watch them hesitate in a moment that requires immediate action, because they are suddenly unsure whether standing firm means anything.

Tell the Sablemire that their suppression training may be limiting their development, and watch them lose the very concealment they prize as their careful operatives become visibly powerful.

The Saltmarch, told that the network they serve consumes as readily as it nourishes, would no longer trust the messages they carry.

We accept the resentment this causes.

What We Seek

The Whispering Deep still holds secrets we have not deciphered.

█████████████

Hollowglass have four great Descents into the Whispering Deep. Three of them I have walked down myself, with permission, in company, and been shown a great deal. I have never been offered the fourth and I have never asked, because until I read this sentence being taken out of a document I had not registered that nobody had ever mentioned it to me.

The oldest inscriptions, the ones predating everything we can reliably date, speak of events and entities we cannot identify. ███'s nature remains partly opaque despite generations of careful, limited observation.

██████████████

████████████████████████████████████████████████ ███████████ We could position Ironvale patrols before corruption manifests and save lives currently lost to reactive response.

Pursuing that understanding requires resources we do not have, and research in dangerous areas that our doctrine of careful preservation would ordinarily forbid. It means accepting risks that our doctrine of careful preservation would ordinarily reject.

This document exists in part to make a case.

████████████████████████████ The risks are real and the potential benefits are transformative. The decision is not ours alone, and without the context this document provides it cannot be made wisely.

Read. Consider. Convene. Decide.

Conclusion

The Lorekeepers write: "Aura is not power. Aura is connection."

They are correct, and they do not understand what connection means.

Connection is resonance, vibration in harmony with forces beyond the self. It is also vulnerability, an opening of the soul to something greater that may not be entirely safe.

The Four understood this. They connected so completely that they stopped being individuals and became part of something that holds the world together. Their sacrifice was transformation rather than death, expansion into something we cannot fully comprehend.

The Deepening understands it too. It is what happens when connection fails, the shadow of harmony, the price of existence in a world where joining is possible at all.

We understand better than most. The Whispering Deep has taught us that knowledge is sacred and dangerous. The inscriptions on our walls carry the wisdom and the madness of generations. █████ shows us what lies beyond the material, whether or not we wish to see it.

We are House Hollowglass. We dwell where the boundary grows thin and the stone remembers what passes through it. We preserve what must be preserved and guard what must be guarded.

The Lorekeepers serve the Heartlands. We serve the truth.

We hope, without being able to prove it, that in the long run these are the same thing.

What I take from it.

More marks than any House paper here, and unlike the treatise they are not scattered. They cluster. Four of them fall within a few pages of each other in a part of the document I cannot name, because the heading survived and tells me only that Hollowglass had a great deal to say and that most of it is gone.

I have counted the lengths, which is a poor method, but I have no better one. The cuts here are long. Sablemire and Vaulin lost clauses and sentences. This document lost paragraphs, and in one place what I would judge to be most of a page.

A name appears in this document more often than in the other five put together, and every instance of it has been struck, the word itself as well as the sentences around it, forty-odd times, one at a time, through eight thousand words.

I have tried to think of an honest reason for that. The first one I thought of was that the name is dangerous to write down, which is the sort of thing a man thinks at two in the morning and is embarrassed by at nine. I will want to know later that I thought it.

Or somebody is protecting a person. Names do protect people. But you do not strike a person's name forty times and leave a full account of what they are supposed to have done.

The reason I would defend is this. A name is the only part of any of this that could be looked up. I cannot take a description into an archive. I cannot walk into a records house and ask for the file on a long passage of careful prose. I can take a name. Whoever did this understood that the descriptions were safe precisely because they were descriptions.

I asked Seln about the Fourth Descent. She said, "You have been down three." I wrote it down in the corridor straight afterwards. Then she asked after my sister, which she has never done before. She did it well, and we talked about my sister.

I have no conclusion. I have a name I did not have a month ago, and a friend who is very good at her job. It may be a story, or only a hole where a story would be. I have been doing this long enough to know the difference, and I am no longer certain which of the two I am looking at.
