The Lorekeeper Treatise on the Nature of Aura

The document the five Houses were responding to Attributed to the Lorekeeper tradition

Released in the Lorekeepers' own compilation. Annotated in the margins by me.

On this document, before you read it.

This is the treatise itself, the paper every House response in this collection was written against. It is also, by a considerable distance, the most heavily cut document I have ever been handed by anybody.

I have counted the marks. There are more of them in these few thousand words than in all five House papers together, and they are not distributed the way the marks in the House papers are. Those were surgical. Somebody went through Sablemire and Ironvale with a fine hand and removed exactly the clauses that stated a thing. This one has been gone over hard and, in places, apparently at random.

Some of what has gone is obviously consequential. Whole sentences under headings that were left standing, so that you can see the shape of the hole. Some of what has gone is four words in a list, about the least controversial subject in the treatise, for no reason I have been able to construct in a week of trying.

I cannot tell you which of those two kinds of cut is the honest one. A person hiding one thing badly and a person hiding one thing well behind a great deal of noise produce a page that looks exactly like this, and I have no way from the page alone to distinguish them.

What I will say is that the Lorekeepers compiled this collection, and this is the Lorekeepers' own treatise, and it is the document they cut hardest.

On the Nature of Aura: Origins, Structure, and the Path to Transcendence

A treatise compiled from Registry archives, House testimonies, and independent scholarly inquiry Attributed to the Lorekeeper tradition, author unnamed

Preface

This document represents the culmination of generations of observation and careful deduction regarding the phenomenon known commonly as "Aura." While the Houses guard their training methods jealously and the Registry concerns itself primarily with classification and control, the Lorekeepers have long sought to understand the why beneath the what.

What follows is our best understanding of Aura's true nature. Where certainty ends and speculation begins, we have marked the passages accordingly. The reader is invited to test these theories against their own experience and contribute corrections to future editions.

Part One: The Source Beyond

1.1 The Fundamental Claim

Common folk believe Aura is an innate reservoir of power within the practitioner, a wellspring that fills and empties. In fact the practitioner channels their power rather than containing it.

The soul of a practitioner is marked by countless microscopic apertures, which we have termed Glimmers, that connect the material self to realms beyond our own. What we perceive as Aura is merely the visible expression of energy flowing through these connections from an exterior source.

This distinction is crucial. A practitioner accesses power rather than having it. The implications for training and ultimate potential differ enormously depending on which model one accepts.

1.2 The Planes Primordial

Beyond the material world exists what some scholars term the ███, a vast metaphysical space that contains within it numerous distinct realms of primordial energy. These planes represent fundamental forces and concepts in their purest forms:

  • The Plane of Fire: Heat, consumption, transformation, passion
  • The Plane of Water: Flow, adaptation, depth, memory
  • The Plane of Air: Movement, freedom, thought, breath
  • The Plane of Earth: ███████████████

This one I do not understand at all. It is four words about Earth in a list of six planes, the other five of which are untouched, and there is nothing in it that a child in any market in the Heartlands could not tell you. I have looked at it for a long time. Either somebody was careless, or somebody wanted me to spend an afternoon looking at four words about Earth. I have now done that.

  • The Plane of Light: Revelation, truth, clarity, hope
  • The Plane of Darkness: Mystery, potential, rest, the unseen

Note: This list is not exhaustive. Testimony from practitioners suggests additional planes: ████████████████████████████████. Whether these represent separate planes or regions within larger ones remains disputed.

These primordial planes are the most common sources for practitioner power, and account for the majority of documented Aura expressions. A practitioner whose glimmers connect to the Plane of Fire will express heat and consuming force. One connected to Darkness will manifest shadow and the weight of the unseen.

1.3 The ██████

Here our understanding grows more speculative, yet the evidence is compelling.

Within the ███, ████████████████████████████████████████████████

A practitioner connected to such a realm would wield Aura unlike any other. Where a fire-touched shares their expression with every other soul connected to that great plane, a practitioner drawing from a █████ would be singular, ███████████████████████████.

This may account for the legendary Wanderers whose abilities defied classification. The Registry's system assumes practitioners draw from common sources. Those connected to ██████ would appear anomalous by definition.

Speculation: Do ██████ persist after their originating consciousness dies? Can multiple practitioners connect to the same █████ across generations? █████████████████████████████████████████

1.4 The █████

All planes, primordial and personal alike, exist within a unified ███ space, as regions of a continuous medium held together by what can only be described as a cosmic fabric.

We do not detail this fabric here. The Lorekeepers who have pursued understanding of it have produced only contradiction and, in three documented cases, madness. It is enough to know that the planes are connected, that travel between them is theoretically possible, ███████████████████████████████.

The Four, at the height of their power, may have understood this fabric intimately. We do not.

Part Two: The Practitioner's Soul

2.1 The Question of Birth

Why do some souls bear glimmers while most do not?

The common folk attribute it to blessing or curse depending on their disposition toward practitioners. The Houses speak of blood and lineage. The Registry documents patterns without explaining them.

Our research suggests the truth encompasses multiple factors, which the philosophically inclined might collectively term fate:

Blood: Children of practitioners are significantly more likely to bear glimmers themselves. This hereditary component is well-documented across all Houses and accounts for the persistence of practitioner lineages.

Proximity: Children whose mothers spent their pregnancy near active practitioners show elevated rates of glimmer manifestation, even absent any blood connection. This suggests that Aura exposure during gestation may catalyze glimmer formation, or that the presence of open portals somehow "teaches" the developing soul to form its own.

Celestial Alignment: Birth records correlated with astronomical observations reveal that children born on certain nights, when the planes draw measurably closer to the material, manifest glimmers at higher rates. No calendar we have constructed predicts these nights, but they are recognizable in retrospect by those sensitive to planar proximity.

Implication: A child of no practitioner blood, born on an auspicious night to a mother who served in a House compound, would carry triple confluence. Such individuals may manifest unusually potent or unusual connections.

2.2 The Dormant State

Those born with glimmers do not immediately manifest power. The apertures exist but remain functionally closed, present yet dormant. A practitioner at this stage is indistinguishable from any other person, even to those with the ability to perceive Aura.

How long can glimmers remain dormant? The evidence is unclear. We have documented cases of awakening in early childhood and others in late middle age. Whether glimmers can remain dormant indefinitely, so that someone might die of old age never knowing what slept within them, remains unknown.

Speculation: How many dormant practitioners walk the Heartlands unaware? The Registry tracks the awakened. No one tracks the potential.

2.3 Awakening: The Guided Path

The Houses have developed, over generations, techniques to open the glimmers in a controlled manner. These methods are closely guarded secrets, and no House shares its awakening traditions with another, but the general principle can be inferred from outcomes.

A guided awakening is gradual. The glimmers are coaxed open rather than forced, allowing the nascent practitioner to acclimate to the flow of energy incrementally. The process may take weeks or months. The result is an Awakening practitioner with functional control from the moment of full awakening.

This controlled approach produces reliable, stable practitioners. It is why House-trained Aura users are preferred for positions requiring discipline and predictability. The Registry's classification system, built primarily on House-trained subjects, assumes this baseline of control.

2.4 Awakening: The Raw Breakthrough

For those without House guidance, awakening comes differently.

The glimmers may crack open spontaneously under specific conditions:

Self-Awareness: In rare cases, an individual becomes conscious of their dormant glimmers through meditation or a near-death experience. This awareness itself can trigger opening.

Emotional Resonance: A moment of overwhelming emotion that aligns with the practitioner's connected plane can force the glimmers open. A fire-connected soul might awaken in a moment of consuming rage, or a darkness-connected soul crack open in profound grief.

In either case, the awakening is violent.

When glimmers are forced open without gradual conditioning, the initial surge of energy is immense, equivalent by our measurements to the peak output of an established Awakening practitioner. This power floods through an unprepared soul with no trained channels to direct it.

The results are often catastrophic. Documented cases include:

  • A fire-touched youth who ignited a barn and three adjacent structures during awakening, killing livestock and nearly himself
  • A water-connected woman whose breakthrough during a riverside argument drowned her companion in waters that rose from nowhere
  • An earth-touched child whose grief at a parent's death caused localized tremors that collapsed the family home

Raw breakthroughs are why Wanderers carry their reputation for unpredictability. Their first experience of power was chaos. Some never fully develop the control that House-trained practitioners take for granted.

Registry Concern: The documentation of raw breakthroughs is necessarily incomplete. How many go unrecorded? How many potential practitioners die in their own awakening, their bodies found amid inexplicable destruction attributed to accident or natural disaster?

Part Three: The Closing of Portals

3.1 An Irreversible Gift?

Common wisdom holds that once awakened, a practitioner remains so until death. The glimmers, once opened, cannot be closed.

The truth is more complicated.

Two documented methods exist for closing a practitioner's connection to their source. Both are rare and terrible.

3.2 The Deepening's Touch

The corruption known as the Deepening, that sealed malevolence which pools in wounded places, demonstrates an ability to rip glimmers from the soul.

Reports from those who have survived proximity to significant Deepening manifestations describe the sensation as having something torn out. Practitioners who experience this become mundane, their connection to their source severed permanently.

Whether the glimmers are destroyed or merely sealed beyond access is unknown. What is known is that no practitioner has ever recovered their ability after Deepening exposure sufficient to close their portals.

3.3 The Master's Touch

Theoretical texts and scattered historical accounts suggest that a practitioner of sufficient power and control can close another practitioner's glimmers intentionally.

This ability requires a degree of mastery almost unheard of in the current age. ██████████████████████████████ Whether anyone living retains this capacity is a matter of speculation.

The process, as we understand it, requires the acting practitioner to somehow reach into the target's soul and close or seal the glimmers individually. This demands extraordinary control as well as power and, presumably, either the target's cooperation or their complete inability to resist.

Speculation: Does the Registry possess anyone capable of this? They maintain their enforcement authority on the assumption that dangerous practitioners can be stopped by conventional means, iron and numbers. ████████████████████████████████████████████████

Counter-speculation: If such a person existed, their mere reputation would serve as deterrent. The Registry's silence on the matter suggests either they lack such capability or they have determined that the threat is more useful as a mystery than a known quantity.

Part Four: The Structure of Growth

4.1 The Awakening practitioner State: Scattered Light

A newly awakened practitioner, whether guided or raw, begins at what the Registry classifies as Awakening.

At this stage, the glimmers remain scattered throughout the soul, countless points of connection, each a tiny aperture to the source. Power flows through all of them simultaneously, and the practitioner has limited ability to regulate this flow.

Control at Awakening is primarily about learning to shape the energy that arrives rather than controlling how much arrives. The practitioner cannot adjust flow at the source; they can only work with what comes through.

This is why Awakening practitioners often describe their power as having a will of its own. In a sense it does: the will of the source, pressing through many uncoordinated channels.

4.2 The Transition to Intent: Coalescence

The path from Awakening to Intent varies by individual and tradition. Our research has documented at least three distinct approaches:

Accumulation: Some practitioners develop by opening additional glimmers, expanding the raw number of connections to their source. This brute-force approach increases total energy access without improving per-channel efficiency.

Expansion: Others focus on widening their existing glimmers, increasing the flow through established channels rather than creating new ones.

Refinement: Still others work on improving the quality of energy they draw, developing techniques to filter or concentrate what their source provides.

Despite these varied approaches, the outcome of reaching Intent is consistent: the glimmers coalesce into a single unified connection, which we term the Root.

This is a fundamental structural change. The countless scattered apertures merge into one. The practitioner who struggled to manage a chorus of tiny portals now commands a single channel with full control over its flow.

The difference is immediately apparent. An Intent practitioner can regulate the intensity and rate of their Aura with precision that Awakening cannot match. They choose how much power to draw and when to draw it. The chaos of early development gives way to true control.

Observation: This may explain why Intent is often considered the threshold of "true" practice in House traditions. Below Intent, one is still learning to manage an undeveloped gift. At Intent, one has achieved the basic mastery that allows genuine technique development.

4.3 The Transition to Mastery: Taking Root Beyond

Growth continues, and at Mastery, another structural transformation occurs.

Through continued practice, the practitioner's Root, their consolidated channel, begins to manifest on the planar side of the connection. Where before the Root existed only within the soul, it now extends into the source itself, taking hold in the practitioner's connected plane.

This grants access to a wider region of the source. Where an Intent fire-practitioner drew from a single point of the Plane of Fire, a Mastery practitioner's rooted connection spreads to encompass a broader area of that realm.

The practical result is variance. The Mastery practitioner can access aspects of their source that were previously unavailable:

  • A fire-touched might access heat without visible flame, or the consuming aspect of fire applied conceptually rather than literally
  • A water-touched might access ice, steam, or the memory aspect of water that some philosophies attribute to it
  • A darkness practitioner might access different kinds of darkness, such as the darkness of concealment against the darkness of rest

This broader palette allows for more complex techniques. Where Intent represents mastery of one color, Mastery represents access to a spectrum.

Observation: At Mastery, practitioners often report feeling "at home" in their source in a way they did not before. The Root taking hold in the plane may create a genuine sense of belonging to that realm.

4.4 The Transition to Presence: The Opening

As the practitioner continues to develop, more roots grow from their central connection, spreading further into their source plane.

At a point that differs for each practitioner and cannot be predicted, these spreading roots reach critical mass. The planar connection, which has been growing more substantial with each development, reaches a threshold.

The portal wrenches fully open.

Where before the practitioner maintained a doorway to their source, now that door has been removed entirely. The connection fills the shape of the soul, becoming a constant and complete overlap between self and source.

At Presence, the practitioner's soul and their connected plane exist in a state of partial merger.

The capabilities this grants are extraordinary:

Planar Shifting: The practitioner can step partially into their source plane, using it for movement that bypasses the material. This enables major teleportation through the plane, entering it at one location and emerging at another.

Material Immunity: By passing partially into the plane, the practitioner can allow material attacks to pass through them. A sword stroke meets nothing; the body it targeted has briefly ceased to be entirely present.

Enhanced Expression: With the full aperture of the source available, the practitioner can manifest their Aura at levels impossible for lower tiers.

However, Presence brings a cost that cannot be avoided:

Source Radiation.

With the portal fully and permanently open, energy from the source flows through constantly and uncontrollably. The Presence practitioner emanates their source at all times. A fire-touched Presence radiates heat that warms any room they enter, and a darkness-connected Presence dims lights in their vicinity. A light-touched Presence glows, however faintly, even in their sleep.

This cannot be suppressed or hidden. The Presence practitioner is always visibly a practitioner.

Social Implication: At Presence, one can no longer live as a normal person among normal people. The isolation burden begins here in earnest. High-tier practitioners of legend often became reclusive from necessity rather than choice, because their very presence altered their environment in ways that made ordinary life impossible.

4.5 The Transition to ███: Becoming the Source

The nature of reaching ███ is not well understood. Those who have achieved it are not available for interview. Those who have observed it describe something that borders on metaphysical transformation.

Our best understanding:

████████████████████████████████████████████████

What walks among us at ███ is, in a sense, an extension of the plane itself, given will and form by the practitioner's consciousness.

At this level, the practitioner develops what some traditions term a ███, a fully-formed expression of their will that can reshape reality in their vicinity. The exact nature of ███ varies by source and practitioner, but all share the characteristic of altering the material world to align with the practitioner's connected plane.

████████████████████████████████████████████████

Note: The Four are the only confirmed ███ practitioners in recorded history. Others may have achieved this level and passed from the world unremarked. ███ is sometimes attributed ███ status, though accounts of their abilities are contradictory.

Part Five: Beyond Mastery

5.1 The Final Sacrifice

██████████████████

A whole line taken out under a heading that was left in. The heading is The Final Sacrifice, and it sits under a part called Beyond Mastery, and both of those survive intact. Whoever did this removed a sentence and left the sign pointing at where the sentence used to be.

The Four, at the height of their power, went beyond wielding ███ and performed an act of transcendent sacrifice that has never been replicated.

████████████

████████████████████████████████████████████████

The Still Ring. The sealing of the Deepening. The stilling of █████ continent.

No living practitioner maintains these. They are permanent alterations to reality, carved by sacrifice.

In closing their portals, the Four gave up all access to their sources. Whatever power they possessed was gone in the moment of imprinting. The act was, by definition, a one-time gesture.

5.2 The Fate of the Four

What happened to the Four after their sacrifice?

They did not die, at least in the conventional sense. █████████████████████████████

The dominant Lorekeeper theory, supported by fragmentary testimony and considerable speculation:

At ███, the Four existed primarily within their source planes, projecting into the material. When they ████████, they severed that projection. The material aspect was lost, imprinted into the world as their final act.

But the planar aspect remained.

████████████████████████████████████████████████

Some practitioners report moments of guidance, intuition too specific to be coincidence, dreams that teach techniques the dreamer had never seen. Whether these represent genuine contact with the Four or merely wishful interpretation of random inspiration cannot be confirmed.

If the Four do persist, they are beyond reach. They sacrificed their ability to return the moment they chose to save the world.

Contemplation: The Four were companions, perhaps friends. They worked together to still the continent and seal the Deepening, and in the same act, they ensured they would never see each other again. Each alone in their own eternal realm, aware of each other's existence but forever apart.

What would drive someone to pay that price?

Part Six: Open Questions

This treatise represents current Lorekeeper understanding, but many questions remain unanswered:

  1. ███: Who or what was ███? Their name appears alongside the Four in contexts suggesting comparable power, yet they are not counted among the legendary heroes. What role did they play?
  1. Glimmer Detection: Can dormant practitioners be identified before awakening? If so, this knowledge would revolutionize the Registry's mission, and raise profound ethical questions about intervention.
  1. ██████: How do ██████ form? Can they be created intentionally? What determines their characteristics?
  1. The Fabric: What is the nature of the █████ that holds the ███ together? Is it manipulable? Is it conscious?
  1. The Deepening: Why does the Deepening have the ability to rip out glimmers? Is it somehow antithetical to the connection between soul and source? What is it, truly?
  1. Transmission of Connection: When a practitioner dies, what happens to their Root? Does it dissolve? Does it persist in the plane? Could it theoretically be inherited or transferred?
  1. The Fifth: Some marginal texts refer to a Fifth among the legendary founders. If they existed, why were they forgotten? If they did not, why did the myth arise?

Conclusion

Aura is not power. Aura is connection.

The practitioner is a doorway, a living bridge between the material world and forces beyond it. Growth is transformation more than accumulation: scattered glimmers becoming unified root, root taking hold in the source, soul and source merging until, at the heights, the distinction dissolves entirely.

The path from awakening to transcendence is a path of becoming less material and more... something else. Something connected to forces older and vaster than the Heartlands itself.

The Four walked that path to its end and then burned behind them. Their sacrifice stilled our world and sealed our greatest threat.

We who study Aura study the fundamental architecture of what makes heroes and monsters possible.

We do so humbly, knowing how much remains unknown.

What I take from it.

I have been asked, more than once and usually kindly, why I keep working on a document that has had this much taken out of it. The answer is that a cut page still tells you things.

It tells you the treatise had a Part Five. It tells you Part Five was called Beyond Mastery and opened with a section called The Final Sacrifice, and that whatever the first line of that section said, somebody thought it should not be read by me. It tells you that the same somebody left the two headings in place, which is either an oversight or a courtesy and I lean toward oversight.

It tells you that five Houses, writing separately for their own people, all stop in the same place. I have said that in other margins and it has not stopped being the most solid thing I have.

And it tells you the Lorekeepers cut their own paper hardest of all six. It would be easy to make that sound sinister, and I have not earned sinister. A House can hold its own paper to the strictest standard for good reasons or bad ones.

I have written to ask. I will record the answer, and how long it took, and whether it arrives faster than the last one did.

One more thing, and it is why I am still working on this.

Every name in this compilation is gone. All of them, in all six documents, including two I would have sworn were not worth the ink it took to strike them.

The rung above Presence has a name. It sits in the Registry's own published grading, and I once heard it used in a tavern by a man who did not know what it meant and was using it to impress somebody. That name has been taken out of six documents, one occurrence at a time, by a person who must have known perfectly well that anybody reading them already had it.

The other name, the one I am still not writing down, has gone the same way.

And the prose around both of them has been left almost untouched. A House's private idiom for the top of the ladder is still standing, and so are three consecutive paragraphs of Saltmarch guessing out loud.

They removed the labels and left the meaning lying in plain sight.

I have spent a fortnight trying to find a reading of that which does not lead where it leads. A name can be written onto a petition or matched against a ledger of who was assessed and when, and a description cannot.

Somebody here was afraid of what a reader might look up, more than of anything a reader might understand. That fear belongs to a particular sort of person, and it is the first thing in six documents that has told me something about the people holding the scissors.

I do not know what there is to find yet.
